Description

Rare (unrecorded) German view of the town, harbor and fortifications of Algiers, toward the end of the Barbary pirate period.

The title describes the town as follows:  ". . .It lives like the whole republic, mostly from sea robbery, under Turkish protection, and always has a garrison of 12,000 [Ottoman] Janissaries . . . "

The image illustrates the city at the end of the piracy era.    After the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna, the European sea powers turned their attention to the the Barbary corsairs. In August 1816, the city was bombarded by a British squadron under Lord Exmouth, assisted by Dutch men-of-war, destroying the corsair fleet harbored in Algiers.   In 1824,Admiral Sir Harry Neal let a British bombardment of Algiers. However, the piracy activity based in Algiers did not entirely cease until France took the region in 1830.
