Description

Scarce colonial map of North Carolina, based upon John Collet map, which appeared in the Universal Magazine. The map shows plentiful towns, counties, rivers, lakes, mountains, inlets, islands, and more.

North Carolina is truncated in the west, with focus being on the eastern part of the state. The map extends westward to Table [Rock] Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near the present site of Morganton. Curiously the border with South Carolina is labelled "Old Boundary Line of South Carolina."

John Collet and the Mapping of North Carolina

John Collet's map greatly surpassed in accuracy and scope any prior map of the region and records the great westward movement of population up to and across the Piedmont region during the middle of the 18th Century. Collet's work became the source map for all maps of North Carolina for the next 40 years (including being the source for Henry Mouzon's map and the map presented) until the issuance of the Price-Strother map in 1808. The Granville District shown on Collet's map is based upon surveys and information gathered by the Granville District Surveyor, William Churton.
