Spanish Rarity Engraved by Van Doetecum

Rare early 17th Century map of the Iberian Peninsula, engraved by Baptista Van Doetecum, one of the most important map engravers of the late 16th and early 17th Centuries.

Includes a finely engraved decorative cartouche, coat of arms, compass rose, rhumb lines,  and sailing ships.

The map appeared in Paulus Merula's Cosmographiae Generalis.  Merula, a Dutch jurist, was appointed to the chair of history at the University of Leiden in 1592. In addition to his Cosmographiae Generalis, he also published folio editions, wrote many treatises on laws and history, and is also known for his geological studies.
