Rare Early Map of Catalonia
Masterfully engraved antique map of Catalonia, prepared by Johann Baptiste Vrients to augment the 1608 edition of Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.
Vrients played an important role in shaping the Theatrum after Ortelius's death in 1598. Not only by continuing its publication, but also by augmenting the book with some of the finest maps that would ever appear in its pages. The Vrients "Ortelius" maps are often dense with new information but make use of extremely skilled engraving and composition to present as a beautiful object.
The wonderful cartouche in the lower right features the Catalan coat of arms and the arms of Barcelona.
This map is based on Vrients's six-sheet map of Catalonia, first published in 1600. The sources for that map are currently unknown.
