Description

Finely executed archeological view of Rome, published at the end of the 16th Century.

The view illustrates in meticulous detail the whole of ancient Rome within its walls, as well as some of the major buildings outside the walls, key to major buildings inset along lower margin.

The map is drawn from the work of Nicolas van Aelst, engraved in about 1575.  Bifolco note that some historians have attributed the view to Gian Giacomo di Rossi, who would re-issue the map in a 1637, with his address and date.  However, Bifolco opines that the view is almost certainly published in about 1600.

The view is oriented with East at the top.
