Description

Fine example Johannes Baptiste Vrients's map of the Urbino region of Italy, which first appeared in the 1608 edition of Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the World.

The map is centered on Urbino, near the Adriatic coast of Italy. Northeast is at the top. The city of Rimini is the northernmost coastal city shown. Falconera is the southernmost coastal city shown.

At the lower-right corner is a Latin dedication to His Serene Excellency Franciscus Maria Feltrius de Ruvere.

Vrients based this map on the single sheet map of the Urbino area that Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617) drew and published in 1596 (Meurer p. 189).
