Description

Rare Early English Map of Cuba

Rare separately issued plan of Havana and environs, published by Mount & Page.

This is one of the earliest charts of Havana published in England. Its publication reflects the recent increase in British interest in Cuba and Havana after the War of Jenkin's Ear. The detailed plan shows the harbor, fortified city and surrounding countryside. A key locates Morro Castle, the Custom House, the Governor's Palace, factories, and batteries.

The chart notes that it was drawn from a survey of Captain James Phelps and engraved by James Mynde.   A large compass rose orients the chart with southeast at the top of the map.

Rarity

We note a single appearance of the map in the past 40 years (2015 OWA, probably this example).
