Description

The Artist's Copy?

Rare pictorial map of the Toluca Lake area, published by the Lakeside Golf Club Map Committee in 1936.

The map includes a fine image of the golf course and the adjoining homes of its remarkable group of owners, including the map maker, Park French, who was the original Toluca Lake architect, as well as the Art Director for a number of famous Hollywood movies in the 1920s.

Other interesting Toluca Lake resident names include Amelia Earhart and Roy Disney. The map is ringed with additional names of famous entertainers, athletes, business leaders, and others, whom we assume were members of the club.

The Bing Crosby estate is pictured top left.

The map is interspersed with historical vignettes telling the story of the region and early history of Toluca Lake and the golf club.

The Artist's Copy?

We note three distinguishing marks on this map that differ from the prior uncolored examples which we have offered for sale.

  1. The present example has the name "J.B. Insfeld, President Emeritus" added to the printing.
  2. The map is inscribed as "Issued To 20 -- Lloyd St. John."
  3. The map is stamped with a copyright mark, the date 1936 and the initials P. F.

We suspect that this might have been the example retained by the artist, Park French, although it could also be the copy owned by Lloyd St. John, who seems to have been active in the aviation industry in Los Angeles in the 1930s.

Rarity

The Toluca Lake map is very rare, especially in original color.
