Description

Fine early map of Crete, published by Francesco Ferretti.

The map first appeared in Ferretti's Diporti notturni, dialloghi familliari, first published in Ancona in 1579. The maps were republished in 1604 and 1608. Ferretti's work consisted of 28 maps of important Islands around the world.

The map shows a fine accurate depiction of the island, engraved by Michelangelo Marelli, surrounded by sea monsters and a represenation of the 8 cardinal wind directions.

Ferretti's work was important in drawing attention to the military losses of the Christian world and advocating for their recovery.
