Description

Detailed map of Slavonia and the Duchy of Syrmia during the 18th century, illustrating this portion of Central Europe during a time fraught with changes emanating from both the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires.

In the 18th century, Slavonia and Syrmia were regions deeply marked by the constant tug-of-war between Ottoman and Habsburg dominions. The map offers a detailed depiction of territories, their divisions, and their affiliations at a time when regional boundaries were far from settled. Major cities such as Belgrad are distinctly marked, serving as urban hubs that played pivotal roles in the geopolitical machinations of the period.

Moreover, the map comes at a critical juncture in history, just after the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718 and preceding the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739, both of which had lasting ramifications for the regions depicted. The Treaty of Passarowitz had resulted in portions of Slavonia and Syrmia coming under Habsburg control, an influence that would remain for years. This transitional period, evident in the map, offers invaluable insights into the evolving status quo as Central Europe moved gradually yet inexorably toward the dissolution of the medieval feudal system.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
