Attractive antique print showing an 18th-century conception of the sun. Apparently based on the observations Father Athanasius Kircher, a late 17th century Jesuit scholar with many interests, the print shows the sun with numerous dark clouds emanating from the outside. These are solar flares and surface eruptions, based on the observations of Kircher and Scheiner in 1635. Kircher's observations were originally published in his masterpiece, titled Mundus subterraneus (The Underground World).
