Description

An attractive large mid-century map of the French Alps, showing the region from Lausanne to Nice. Roads, rivers, lakes, and topography are all shown. The many towns and cities of the regions are shown with their points of interest indicated, including "Chateaux," "Winter Sport," and "Classical Remains." The verso depicts eight different itineraries for tourists wishing to explore the region, alongside text about the Alps and traditional old alpine costumes.

The verso includes a great deal of interesting information. Traditional women's dresses from the towns of Fontcouverte, Bourg St. Maurice, St. Jean d'Arves, and Megeve are all shown, varying in small but noticeable ways. Also pictured are two routes, the "Route Napoleon or Winter Route" and the "Route of the Grandes Alpes or Summer Route." Both make their way down from Lake Levan [Geneva] to the Mediterranean. Accompanying the drawn routes are extensive descriptions regarding the sights of each voyage.

This map was produced by the French ministry involved in tourism and distributed by a travel agency located in Los Angeles at the present site of the NoMad Hotel.
