Can You Find Rick's?
This is a fine large plan of Casablanca published by Publi-Maroc and printed by Gaillac-Monrocq et Cie. in Paris. The map includes 3 insets; Pointe O'Oukkacha, Pointe O'El Hank, and a table showing "Les Principaux Quartiers De Casablanca."
The map is very detailed, with all the neighborhoods, streets, parks, and attractions of Casablanca clearly labeled. The ancient, twisting streets of the old and new medinas (marketplaces) located in the north and south (respectively) of the city are all clearly visible. Casablanca was rapidly growing at the time of this map's publication, and the newly planned streets on the outskirt of town are clearly visible on this map without yellow shading.
1950s Morocco was a French protectorate, having been previously controlled by Vichy France from 1940 to 1942 after the German occupation of France. However, after the North African Campaign, Morocco was under Allied control and thus was active in Allied operations until the end of the war. With large numbers of American and British troops stationed in the area during and after the war, Morocco and Casablanca came to dominate the imagination of the postwar English-speaking imagination. This was only furthered by the 1942 classic film named after the city and still popular today.
The firm of Gaillac-Monrocq dates back to 1860, when it began as Monrocq frères. This company specialized in Moroccan cartography and also produced several desirable travel posters.
Rarity
This separately issued map is rare. We locate 2 examples (UC Berkeley and Boston University). This map also appears in a scarce collection of Moroccan maps published by Gaillac Monrocq et Cie., the Cartes Tarides.
