Description

Nice example of one of the best pictorial maps or bird's-eye views of the San Juan Islands.

The map features all of the islands of the San Juan archipelago, including Fidalgo (and Anacortes), Orcas, and San Juan (including Friday Harbor).

Interesting historical notes are scattered around the map. Despite its painterly style, the map manages to pack in an impressive amount of information, with dozens of map symbols elaborated in a key at the lower left.

The map is a great example of Richard A. Pargeter's characteristic realistic mapmaking style. Pargeter made maps of the Pacific Northwest for decades starting in the 1950s.

We have previously had two variants of the view, this is the first of this configuration (with a different border and title) that we have seen. Perhaps indicating that it is the rarer of the three.
