Description

5,000 Square Miles of Mountain Scenery

Lively pictorial map of the Black Hills region, published by Dean Warner Holmgren in Rapid City.

While the maker is not identified, the Black Hills Weekly (Deadwood) for May 19, 1950 identifies the Dean Nauman as the maker, praising the map's "pictures of historical and scenic points in the Black Hills," and noting that the "absence of commercial advertising makes it an excellent piece of Americana for framing or display."  The map was offered separately for sale, by Nauman, who was also the author of Your Black Hills, 1950.  Year Round Vacationland.  The map and guide were both published by Holmgren.

The map locates 100 tourist points of interest, each of which is accompanied on the map by a vignette.

On the verso are a series of photos promoting the region.

Rarity

The map is extremely rare. No copies located by OCLC and the only reference to the map we could locate was the copyright deposit notice and note in the Black Hills Weekly (Deadwood) for May 19, 1950.
