Description

Rare vintage pictorial map of Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Frederick O. Tyszko, issued as a promotion for his insurance business in 1955.

The map sports decorative elements, such as an illustration of Vancouver's H.M.S. Discovery, and quite a bit of detail on the island; churches, roads, major public buildings are all noted.

Tyzsko's obituary from 1992, paints a picture of an upstanding community member who played an important role in the civic culture of Bainbridge Island:

Frederick Olaf "Fred" Tyszko, 75, a longtime Bainbridge Island resident and community leader, died Sunday while playing golf with friends.

He was born Oct. 21, 1916, in Chicago to immigrant parents. He married Bainbridge Island native Evelyn Logg in 1941 and the couple lived on Bainbridge Island the rest of their lives. Mrs. Tyszko died in July.

Mr. Tyszko served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a navigator on B-24 bombers in the South Pacific. In 1947 he joined the American Legion and helped build the present Legion Hall on Bainbridge Island. He was commander of Colin Hyde Unit 172 from 1953-54.

In 1948 he and his wife established Tyszko Insurance Agency in Winslow which they operated until 1983...

According to an ink stamp on the map: "Copies of this map on heavier unfolded paper, suitable for hanging, may be obtained without charge from my office." That being said, we have never seen any edition of this map before, folded or unfolded, and we can reasonably conclude that it is very rare today.
