Interesting gouache-overpainted example of Ernst Conrad's scarce 1883 view of Zurich.
The lithographed view is oriented to the south with the Platzspitz, at the confluence of the Limmat and Sihl, in the foreground.
Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz HLS provides the following description for the Zurich Public Library's example of this view [translated]:
At the national exhibition of 1883, Zurich presented itself as a big city for the first time. The Platzspitz at the confluence of the Limmat and Sihl rivers as well as the Aussersihl industrial quarter (front right in the picture) belonged to the exhibition grounds. The university quarter (far left), the main train station and the new business district on the lower Bahnhofstrasse are shown in the middle distance. The old town is shown as a church town with the silhouettes of Grossmünster, Fraumünster and St. Peter.
The view was printed in the working gallery of the Aussersihl lithographers' cooperative.
