Rare pair of maps of the eastern hemisphere and western hemisphere, prepared by Daniel Friedrich Sotzmann.
The map titles indicate that the maps were constructed using Aaron Arrowsmith's monumental map of the World on a Globular Projection.
Sotzmann employs an interesting 10 degree extension of the maps beyond the outer ring of each hemisphere, in order to provide a clearer depiction of the islands in the Pacific Ocean, from New Zealand to the Behring Strait.
The eastern hemisphere shows the most recent discoveries of Matthew Flinders along the southern coast of Australia, including his circumnavigation of Van Diemen's Land, which would soon thereafter result in the naming of Bass Strait as the passage between Tasmania and the mainland.
The map also provides up to date information in the Pacific Northwest and the arctic regions.
This pair of maps was issued in several states. This seems to be the latest state, with the most complete treatment of the Australian coastline. It is also apparently the rarest, as we were not able to find another example.
