Description

First Edition.

Interesting and scarce map of the Upper Midwest, focusing on the northern parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, as well as Lake Superior.

The map was produced by John Disturnell in 1871 in the context of a metals mining boom in the region, specifically silver in Ontario and Copper in the UP. Hand-coloring denotes copper (yellow), gold (pink), iron (green), silver (blue).

The map includes an inset plan of the mining works at Silver Islet, Ontario.

The map appears in several editions. An 1874 edition appeared in Sailing on the Great Lakes and Rivers of America... which extended the railroads, especially in Minnesota. This 1871 edition is apparently the first.

The map was drawn and engraved by J. Calvin Smith for John Disturnell.
