Description

One of the earliest obtainable maps of Oregon's Capital City

Finely executed map of Salem, Oregon published by the Union Abstract Company.

This is the earliest map of Salem which we could locate.

The map provides a detailed overview of the city.  Different additions to the city are portrayed in different pastel colors, while black outlines show important public buildings and transportation routes.

The Capitol Building, Court House and Willamette University are shown, as is the Friends Polytechnic Institute.  Close to the river, a Flouring Mill is shown, with an adjacent Water Works and a Iron Works a few blocks to the north.

Rarity

The map is rare.  OCLC locates 3 examples (Yale, University of Oregon, Oregon Historical Society).
