San Francisco Pilot Boat No. 3 -- the George Peabody

Interesting ship portrait of a gaff schooner George Peabody of San Francisco, sailing near the Farallon Islands.

The George Peabody was brought to San Francisco in 1868 from Boston. She was 71 feet in length, 20.8 beam, and 8-foot depth. In 1894 she was converted for a sealing cruise of Japan, where she was wrecked the following year. Thus the drawing was made sometime between 1868 and 1894.

She was the last pilot boat brought from the East, after which the local ship-building industry could accommodate those needs.

The drawing seems to have been prepared as a Christmas gift, as an oyster shell in the border reads "MERRY X'MAS".

As a piece of California maritime artwork, the drawing is rather unusual.
