Description

Scarce hand-colored lithographed map of New York City, published by Charles Magnus in 1852.

The sheet features a map of Manhattan to the Distributing Reservoir (now home to the NYPL); a map of Brooklyn; a bird's-eye view of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights; a vignette of City Hall, and another of the University at Washington Square (now NYU).

An extensive street key surrounds the map of Manhattan: "To instantly find out any Street in this Map, it is only necessary to look for its name in the alphabetical list at the sides, and then refer to the square pointed out by the figure sand letters attached to that name."
