Description

The Burning of the Kuwaiti Oilfields as seen during STS-37.

Perhaps the most iconic map-like image of one of the worst environmental disasters in human history, the 1991 burning of the Kuwaiti oil fields by the retreating Iraqi army.

The photo was taken from the Space Shuttle in April 1991, as it performed STS-37.

The Kuwaiti oil fires were set in January and February 1991, and it took from April to November of that year to extinguish them.

Kuwait City and Kuwait Bay are at the center of the image, with the Persian Gulf to the right. Oil wells to the north and south of Kuwait City burn with large plumes of smoke stretching away to the south, over Saudi Arabia.
