The map was likely intended to be sold as a companion to a guide book issued by Westphal for the area around Rome.
The engraving is of a very high quality, elegantly capturing the topographical features of the region. The map is very much focuses on early touristic travel, with very limited detail other than the locations of touristic locations, such as buildings, caves, lakes, towers, churches, ancient roads, and topographical features.
The inset maps provide details around major tourist sites, including Ostia Antica, Tuscolo, Lago del Fucino, Fiumicino, Veio, San Felice Circeo and Terracina.
