Description

Impressive large-format pictorial map poster of San Francisco, published by California Living Books, a division of The Hearst Corporation, with art by Jeanie Landles Kortum, in 1977.

A fascinating pictorial map of San Francisco, born of and redolent of the Hippie era, but with elements that harken to the work of contemporary artists such as Grayson Perry. Kortum presents a geography of San Francisco that is largely comprised of people and neighborhoods, not concrete elements of physical geography or official political geography. It reads like a map drawn from memory, or more accurately, personal memories.

Many of illustrated places are libraries, playgrounds, parks, and other places of public social engagement. The map is not entirely family-friendly, as the strip clubs and peepshows of Broadway also make an illustrated appearance.

The map was published by California Living Books, which was involved in publishing books about California and San Francisco history. The map capitalizes off of the reputation that San Francisco had developed during the Summer of Love and shortly thereafter.

Haight-Ashbury makes a brief appearance as a crescent moon smoking a pipe.
