Manuscript School Girl Copy of the Whitelaw Map of Vermont

Finely executed map of Vermont, drawn by Esther Conkey, who was then likely about 18 years old and attending school in Poultney.

The map shows counties, townships, rivers, topographical features.  Burlington is named.  Township names may have been employed using a stamp.

The model for the map is almost certainly the 1821 Whitelaw Wall Map of Vermont.

The map was drawn by Esther Conkey and is dated October 22, 1821.  This likely Esther Conkey Gale (1803 - 1888), who lived her entire life in Orwell, Vermont.  She married Dr. Nathan Gale in 1826.
