Description

A fine example of one of the greatest world maps of the Golden Age of Pictorial Mapmaking, by one of the art's foremost practitioners, Ernest Dudley Chase.

The map was issued in 1939 on the eve of the Second World War and reflects the optimism and technological advancements of the Inter-War Period. It is drawn on the Mercator Projection, a fact celebrated in a note under the title, and includes hundreds of images of global landmarks and triumphs of technology (largely related to the nascent field of air travel).

There are two editions of the map: one dated in the imprint line, with sepia-tone printing; and one undated, with a wider range of color printing. Some sources date the multi-color map later than the sepia. The sepia edition seems to be more frequently signed by Chase than the other edition.

Condition Description
Signed in pencil by chase in the lower margin. Right side with very light toning. Altogether an excellent example.
