Description

Rare town plan of Berlin, Germany, published in London by John Luffman.

The map is quite detailed and shows the fortified nature of the city at the beginning of the 19th century, during the Napoleonic Wars.

Unlike most modern-day major European cities, the cartographic history of Berlin is not nearly as broad and deep as say for Paris, London, or Rome. Because of the vicissitudes of history, only a fraction of the effort was spent mapping Berlin as was dedicated to other global European cities.

At the bottom of the map is a key of points of interest A-Q and a note: "Berlin: The Capital of the Electorate of Brandenburg & of the whole Prussian dominions, the residence of the King, is one of the largest & most beautiful cities of Germany; it is 500 miles N by W of Vienna..."
