Description

Promoting Death Valley Tourism

Rare promotional map of Death Valley, published to promote early tourism by the Death Valley Hotel Company LTD.

The map provides a marvelous topographical illustration of the valley and its environs.  Within the valley, the major sites are located, with Scotty's Castle and Ubehebe Crater shown in the far north and the Harmony Borax Works just north of Furnace Creek Ranch, with an airport just to the east.

The Death Valley Rail Road is shown coming into the Valley from the east, via Death Valley Junction.

At the top of the map, a number of (soon to be) Ghost / Mining towns are shown.

The illustrator of the present map, Howard A. Burke, was born in Illinois in 1900. Burke was both illustrator and art critic for the San Francisco Examiner and the Los Angeles Examiner from 1932 to 1940. Howard Burke prepared several maps for the Los Angeles Examiner during WWII, including:

Rarity

The map is very rare.  OCLC locates only a 1930 edition of the map (Bancroft Library).

The map seems to have been enlarged, with Harvard, UCLA and UNLV holding larger versions of the map, which are apparently undated.
