Description

Large scale vintage map of the air mail routes of the U.S. Postal Service as of August 1962.

The image consists of a general map of the United States, with insets of Hawaii, Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Panhandle, the Midwest and Northeast,

The visualization is not without its issues; for instance, the continuously joining and separating branches leave some ambiguity about what routes actually existed along the busier routes. For instance, there are uninterrupted lines from Los Angeles to Grand Junction, Lincoln, Kansas City, and Chicago. Did all of these routes exist, or is this an artifact of regional routes from Las Vegas and Denver being grouped in with the main route from LA to Chicago?
