Description

Excellent complete set of six small engravings of landscape scenes around Clerkenwell and Islington, by perhaps the greatest visual recorder of 17th-century London, the Czech engraver Wenceslaus Hollar.

One  of the engravings in the set is labeled in the plate "Sold by John Overton." Overton was a major London print publisher of the 17th and early 18th centuries. He set his sons up in 1707 when he apparently retired.

Hind (72) comments on the set:

Nos. 72-77 form a series of Islington (or more strictly Clerkenwell) views.

Parthey says that later impressions of the whole series bear Overton's address. But I have only seen his address on No. 77.

Hind includes good attempts to locate the perspective of each view.

Condition Description
Six separate prints. Each print trimmed outside the neatline and captions.
