Description

The first book written by a native American to be published in Sweden (Streeter)

An extremely rare tract relating to the Swedish colonization on the Delaware River, which was privately printed and not offered for sale.  The work gives a short account of the Swedish settlement in America, which makes the first mention of Papegoja as de facto governor of New Sweden.

In his 1872 Catalog Books on America (#1141), Frederick Muller describes the book as follows:

An extremely rare little work, as all the early Swedish publication on America; this must be still more so, as it was printed as Dissertatio gradualis, and thus not put into commerce, but presented only to the Professors of the University and some friends of the author.   Indeed , I have found no notice of it in the American bibliographies. . . .

On page (5) the poems by Jesper Swedberg (an uncle of the author) that sometimes are lacking. Sabin 94037. According to Streeter the "Dissertatio gradualis de Svionum" was "the first book written by a native American to be published in Sweden".

Justin Windsor, Narrative and Critical History of America, Volume IV, page 493:

The Dissertatio Gradualis de Svionum in America Colonia of Johan Danielson Svedberg cites Campanius, and makes the first mention of Papegåja as provisional Governor of New Sweden. The author was a nephew of Jesper Swedberg, Bishop of Skara, who had the supervision of the Swedish Luthern congregations in America, and cousin-german to Emmanuel Swedenborg, the heresiarch, and his brother Jesper Svedberg, who taught school for over a year at Raccoon in New Jersey.
