Description

Rare map of the Southwestern US, based upon Tanner's seminal Map of North America. Includes very distinctive depictions of the twin rivers Timpanagos and S. Buenaventura, flowing from the two Salt Lakes in Utah to San Francisco Bay and just south of Monterrey. The map was included in G. A. Scherpf's Entstehungsgeschichte und gegenwärtiger Zustand des neuen, unabhängigen Staates Texas, published in 1841. Scherpf's emigrant's guide was one of the most influential guidebooks for German Emigrants to Texas, which depicted in glowing terms the great personal liberty and the plentiful and productive land to be found in Texas, had served to direct the nobles' attention to the Republic of Texas as the best destination for an increasing German emigration. Scherpf included two maps, a reduced example of the Hunt & Randel map of Texas and this map. Streeter notes that is a redrawing of the inset of the 1839 Hunt & Randel map, on a smaller scale. Streeter 1395. A flawless example.
