Description

Large 17th-century English map of Africa, with considerable detail in the interior and an attractive cartouche in the upper-right corner.

Berry's composite atlases are sometimes referred to as English Sanson atlases. In this case, his map of Africa is closely based on the 1674 Jaillot Africa (Betz 118), which in turn was based on the Guillaume Sanson Africa of 1668. Berry credits Sanson in the title.

Rarity

Betz (124) locates five examples of the map: Newberry Library, British Library, Royal Geographical Society, Stanford University (Norwich Collection), and Library of Congress.

The map is only known in one state.
