Harwood was, at the time, actively engaged in promoting land he owned to the North of Fargo.
A.J. Harwood
A.J. Harwood was almost certainly the founder of Harwood Township in North Dakota. In 1881, Harwood purchased a tract of land previously sold by the Railroad to Austin Corbin of New York in 1875. After commencing development, a post office opened in 1881 and the town was platted in 1882. The town began to grow as a general store opened, followed by a meat market, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable. There were two elevators in Harwood, and the White Lumber Company had a lumber yard. The Great Northern Railroad had a depot in Harwood.
