Rare Early-20th-Century Set of 20 Maps of the Bahamas

Attractive set of maps published in London by the famed mapmakers Stanford's, showing the many islands and cays found in the Bahamas. The work includes one map of the Bahamas as a whole, as well as full-page maps of all of the most famous islands, including Andros, the Biminis, and the Berry Islands.

In addition to the extremely attractive and detailed maps, an introductory text describes the history, geography, and politics of the island. A table is provided which details the populations of various islands and towns, which total to 53,301 across the Bahamas as a whole. An index at the back of the book lists hundreds of place names, with the islands they are located on and the sheet on which they can be found.

The introductory text mentions that "During the winter months the Islands, especially New Providence, are the resort of a large number of American tourists." This work was published the year "Watlings Island" was renamed to San Salvador (the name supposedly originally given by Christopher Columbus), and both names are given.

This book is scarce on the market. This is the first time we have handled the work.
