1819 (1822) Henry Schenk Tanner
$ 2,200.00
Description

Unrecorded Final State.

Extremely rare 10th state (and presumed final) state of one of the best 19th-century maps of Ohio and Indiana.

The map was initially issued in 1819, though here that information has been obliterated from the imprint line in the copper plate.

A total of 9 states of the map had been traced until the discovery of this final edition. This example was issued as a separate folding map, not in Tanner's American Atlas, as previous states had been.

Tanner's map of Ohio and Indiana is probably the single best series of maps through which to trace the development of the counties and cities in those two states.

The first state of the map was titled "Ohio and Indiana by H.S. Tanner". With the title changing to "Sectional Map..." in 1844.

Tanner's American Atlas

Henry Schenk Tanner commenced production of his most ambitious project, his American Atlas, in 1818. The project was undertaken with partners by subscription. As maps became available, they were issued in folios, with the intention that they would later be bound together to make up a full atlas.

Released in 5 folios between 1819 and 1823, the American Atlas is widely regarded as the single most beautiful large scale atlas published in America and was a vast leap forward in terms of the quality of the paper and engraving. The maps are large, detailed and elegantly engraved. The cost and delays in production resulted in the split of Tanner from his partners Kearny & Vallance, but resulted in the greatest of all American Atlases.
