Description

Large detailed world map, detailing the discoveries from Cook's 1st & 2nd voyages, but not the third. Interesting NW Coast of America, still based largely on the the Russian Discoveries and including Behring's coast, Tchirikow's Coast, R. de los Reyes according to de Fonte, Fuca's Opening, the River of the West (based on Lahanton's Longue River), Aguilar's Opening, Drake's Harbor, etc. Most interesting is the Stachtan Nitada of the Russians, one of the rare references to the 1730s nomenclature used by the Russians for this region. The only other references to this region are from Cook related world maps. Van Diemen's Land is attached to New Holland, with an early configuration, and only two islands shown for new Zealand, with Cook's Strait named. So sign of Antarctic explorations. A fine example of this map, which often shows up with fold damage. Gorgeous wash coloring.
