Hollywood Pictorial Rarity

Rare pictorial map of Hollywood and a larger map of California  on the reverse side and a smaller map of Downtown Hollywood, published by Lowell E. Jones and lithographed by Hester & Smith.

Published immediately after World War II, Jones' pictorial map series provides a marvelous caricature depiction of Hollywood and the Los Angeles Basin at the start of its next great boom period.

The smallest map (10.7 x 8 inches), Downtown Hollywood, provides an excellent overview of the major studios, theaters, Hollywood eateries, hotels and other public buildings, which stretch out along Hollywood Blvd between La Brea and Gower.

The map of Greater Los Angeles -- Hollywood Film Capital of the World (16 x 10.7 inches) -- provides more expansive look at the LA Basin, with marvelous images of the film and leisure industry sprawling across the Basin.

The largest of the three maps (16 x 21.7 inches), covering all of Califronia, expands on the recreational and leisure theme, providing entertaining vignettes showing the regional attractions and commerce throughout California, from Tijuana to the Modoc Lava Beds, along with offshore recreation.

Rarity

The map is very rare. We note copies at the LA Public Library, UCLA and Yale.
