Description

Original Hand Color Miniature Du Val Atlas.

Superb little atlas of the world by Pierre Duval, first issued in 1657, and here in the second edition of 1661.

The atlas includes a suite of world and continents maps, as well as a celestial map, two polar maps, and a relatively large number of Asian maps (9 in total).

Duval is the only author of this atlas, for which Antoine de Fer was the editor. To make the atlas, Duval largely copied (38 out of 40 maps) from the Trésor des cartes géographiques des principaux estatz de l'univers. The new maps are number 5, Pole Antarctique, and number 15, Empire du Monomatapa. France, Germany, and Russia are dated 1651.

The atlas was issued in 1657, 1661, 1662 (IIIC), and, in 1686, Nicolas de Fer edited 18 of the maps and included them in his Europe et ses descriptions.

Certain maps and text leaves include the de Fer privilege "de Fer Execu Avec Privilege du Roy".

The atlas is rare, as are the maps themselves - we have had very few, if any, maps from the atlas.
