Description

Unique Variant of this rare separately published map of a portion of the nothernmost portion of the Upper Peninsula. "W.W. Manning, agent, Marquette, Mich."

The map is divided into townships and shows a number of Railroads and a large inset map of Isle Royale.

The map also shows mines, railroads, roads, iron indications, and post offices; covers Michigan's Upper Peninsula east to Range 31 West. 

The map shows the lands owned by James C. Ayer.  James Cook Ayer (1818  – 1878) was the wealthiest patent medicine businessman of his day.  He was apprenticed to James C. Robbins, a druggist in Lowell. While there he studied medicine, and later he graduated from the medical school of the University of Pennsylvania.  Ayer never practiced medicine, but devoted his principal attention to pharmaceutical chemistry and the compounding of medicines. His success in this line was very great, and soon led him to establish a factory in Lowell for the manufacture of his medicinal preparations, which became one of the largest of its kind in the world. He accumulated a fortune estimated at $20,000,000.

The map includes the signature of George Voeckler.  Voelker was a businessman and bar owner located in Ishpeming, Michigan.  His sone, John D. Voelker, wrote Upper Peninsula based novels and fly fishing books under the pen name of Robert Traver.

Rarity

The map is very rare.  We were unable to locate another example bearing the date of 1893.

OCLC locates 3 examples bearing the date of 1884 (Wisconsin Historical Society, Marquette County Historical Society and University of Michigan).
