Description

This is a vintage map of Midtown Manhattan, stretching in scope from 22nd Street to Central Park. Many dozens of places of interest are shown, including churches, theatres (over fifty), art galleries, and much more. Each category of building is shown in a different color, with hotels in blue, banks in orange, and clubs in red. Subway routes, bus lines, and more are all shown. The complex parking laws of Manhattan are detailed.

The verso shows a more complete map of the area, reaching from Battery Park to the northern end of Central Park. Parts of Brooklyn and New Jersey are shown. This map takes on a slightly more pictorial style, showing famous buildings, cars, boats, subways, and more.

The map was produced by the Vanderbilt Hotel and this entity is advertised by the rest of the verso. Completed in 1912, the building was decorated with abundant terra-cotta statues, one of which can be seen on the image of the Dell Robbia Room. An attractive panorama shows New York City, angled roughly from the Empire State Building to the Chrysler Building, providing a good view of Midtown. Another advertisement is provided for the Bon Air Vanderbilt in Augusta, detailing its position next to the Augusta national golf course. This latter was founded one year prior to the map being made. Advertisements mention lower rates, perhaps reflecting the Depression-era difficulties faced by tourist industries.

In all, this is an attractive and detailed of one of the most important business districts in the world, just after the first boom of the area during the 1920s following the remodeling of Grand Central Station.
