Description

A map showing the route of the 1969 Tour de France. This race passed through Roubaix, Maastricht, Nancy, Mulhouse, Chamonix, Revel, Luchon, Bourdeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, and Creteil before finishing in Paris. Hors-Categories climbs include Col de la Madeleine, the Col Du Tourmalet, the Col d'Aubisque, and the Puy-de-Dome. The map is attractively presented, surrounded by attractive French advertisements typical of the period.

This would be the first race to organize riders into commercial teams rather than teams based on nationality.  Eddy Merckx would dominate the race, and would take the general, points, and mountains classification, the only time this has ever occurred in the Tour. Stage 17 from Luchon to Mourenx-Ville-Nouvelle would go down as one of the best in the Tour, with Merkx attacking on col after col. While his race director recommended he wait for the peloton to catch up and eat some food after the Tourmalet, Merckx decided to press on and eventually took a lead of fifteen minutes over everyone else but a small pack.
