Description

This is a detailed navigation chart of the Salish Sea, from the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Gulf of Georgia. The map shows the San Juan Islands, Admiral Island, and parts of Vancouver Island, the Olympic Peninsula, and the mainland. At the northern end of the map is the Fraser River, which now comprises the southern part of the City of Vancouver.

This map shows and labels soundings, banks, rocks, harbors, inlets, and much more. A brief legend shows various features including the material and color of bottom sediments and the location of kelp beds. This map would have been used by captains who transported early settlers to the many communities around the Salish Sea, including those searching for gold in Vancouver and those looking to work in the Seattle timber industry.

As with all U.S. Coast Survey charts, this map provides a wealth of information while preserving a simple and attractive design.
