Description

A highly detailed plan of Philadelphia from one of the best 19th-century English commercial atlases. Numerous streets, squares, buildings of historical interest, and railroads are all named. The map includes a key naming ninety buildings and other places, and inset views of the United States Bank and the [Philadelphia Stock] Exchange.

While proposed city planning stretches off of this map, development barely reaches the Schuylkill River, as indicated by the shaded city blocks. Some small perturbations exist to the street grid, the most noticeable of which is Francis Ville, a pre-existing small village that became engulfed by Philadelphia shortly after the map was made.

Notable buildings and places of Philadelphia readily apparent on the map include the State House, Philadelphia Library, Franklin Institute, and the US Mint. Tanner's Map Establishment is deemed important enough to be mentioned. The University of Pennsylvania is labeled at a small site on Ninth Street, the site of the former Presidential Mansion. The campus resided here from 1801 until the 1870s when the university moved to its present West Philadelphia location. Girard College, the prestigious boarding school, is shown, having been opened just seven years earlier.
