Description

A decorative pictorial map of the Montana Rockies published in a short promotional guide by the Missoula Chamber of Commerce. The map extends from the Salmon River region in the south to Canada, west to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and east to Glacier Park, Butte and Deer Lodge. The verso includes text and photographs regarding Montana State University and the North Coast Limited Railroad.

This map is focused on the various roads through the Rocky Mountain region of Montana. Vignettes illustrating wildlife, outdoor recreational activities, and points of interest are all included. The decoration ranges from the artful to the caricatural, with drawings such as neatly sketched geese migrating over Canada or bigheaded greenhorns zooming by in cars. Several pieces of text give advice regarding topics such as reporting wildfires. The legend lists only two features of note: dude ranches and ranger stations, though, in reality, the map shows much more.

The essay in the bottom left shows that this work was published as part of a short booklet focused on the "Vacation Wonderland" of Western Montana. It lists the many wonders of the area including Glacier National Park, the Flathead area, and the Mission Range.

This map was also published separately at around the same time. The artist, John B. LaCasse, would seem to have been a career employee of the US Forestry Service in the Missoula area.
