1836 Henry Schenk Tanner
On Hold

Detailed and interesting map of Philadelphia, hand-colored by apparently by wards, although curiously so.

The index of buildings on the right side of the map paint a picture of a city bustling with commerce and civic life. Public buildings, hotels, churches (including a Jews Synagogue) and banks are listed.

Tanner's Universal Atlas was the forerunner of a series of atlases continued by Mitchell, Thomas Cowperthwait, Desilver, SA Mitchell Jr and others which extended to the early 1890s. Separate Tanner maps are increasingly scarce on the market and highly sought after. Special detail has been given to this map of Tanner's home city.
