Description

A gorgeous example of Tanner's map of Louisiana, with a large inset map of New Orleans. The map is hand-colored by parish and shows towns, rivers, canals, roads, railroads, and more. Railroads and canals are highlighted in blues and oranges. Insets provide additional information.

It is interesting to trace the development of the parish structure through different generations of Louisiana maps. Over time, parishes in the west and north of the state steadily decrease in size, splitting into various new parishes. While a map from a few years earlier had Natchitoches spreading across most of the northeast, Claiborne, Ouachita, and others have eaten away at its extent. The already rather densely populated southeast is not exempt from this phenomenon, with Feliciana being split into West and East Feliciana in 1824, as shown on this map. Feliciana originally comprised the Louisiana portion of West Florida.

The inset map of New Orleans is attractively colored by faubourg. A legend informs about various points of interest, including hotels, convents, forts, and cemeteries. The map is detailed for the oldest part of the city, centered on the area now known as the French Quarter and then referred to simply as the "City."

Tanner's maps are now quite scarce.
