Description

A rare map of New Orleans and San Francisco, from Rogers & Johnston's Atlas of the United States. The map shows the layout of the two cities including streets, neighborhoods, and other major features. San Francisco is mostly limited to the present day Financial District and Embarcadero, and the map also shows the Marin Headlands and some islands of San Francisco Bay. New Orleans is slightly more developed, stretching from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain.

The inclusion of these two maps on the same sheet is an interesting choice. Whatever reason Rogers and Johnston may have had, these two cities would become famous centers of American culture in the 20th century. They were a meeting place for jazz musicians and Beat poets, and are frequently jested as two of only three true cities in America.
