Description

Finely engraved title page, which first appeared in Herrera's Descripcion de las Indias Ocidentales, first published in Madrid in 1601.

Herrera served as the official historian of the King of Spain, and he produced a substantial history of the West Indies, Central and South America. Originally published in 1601 in Madrid, it was reissued later in several editions and languages.

This example is from the second Spanish edition, issued in 1730.

This hand-colored lithograph, created by Jules Renard, known by his pseudonym Draner (a reverse spelling of his surname), was published in Paris in 1865.
